Nappy rash
Caused by friction from tight nappies or prolonged contact with wet or tight nappies
Nappy rash symptoms
Red rash on buttocks - this is an irritant nappy rash
A secondary fungal infection may occur:
this appears as red papules on the outer edge of the rash between buttocks and beneath the cheeks
Nappy rash referral
Yellow crusts, weeping skin = infection
Broken skin
Other body parts affected, this may be atopic eczema
OTC treatment that does not respond after 1 week
Nappy rash OTC treatment
Barrier preparations - forms a protective layer over the skin
e.g Sudocream, Metanium
If there are signs of a fungal nappy rash:
Clotrimazole (Canasta)
Miconazole (Daktarin)
Apply for 7 days after the skin has cleared to prevent recurrence
Skin care and nappy hygiene
Change nappies as soon as they are soiled or wet
Leave nappy off to allow skin to air dry
Avoid waterproof nappies as they prevent the evaporation of moisture
