Slapped cheek syndrome
Viral infection, caused by parvovirus B19
Once you have had the infection, you are typically immune to it for life
Is slapped cheek syndrome self-limiting
Yes, typically clears up within 1-2 weeks
Slapped-cheek syndrome symptoms
Initial cold symptoms (this is the most contagious period - patient may have headache, runny nose, malaise)
Bright red rash on cheeks
Itchy rash on trunks and limbs
Slapped cheek syndrome referral
Pregnant women - may cause miscarriage
Patients with blood disorders. e.g sickle cell anaemia
OTC symptomatic relief
No specific treatment for slapped-cheek
Simple analgesics such as paracetamol, ibuprofen can be given for fever, headache
Antihistamines can be offered for an itchy rash
Slapped cheek advice
Once the rash appears, the child is no longer contagious and does not need to stay away from school
