Impetigo
A bacterial infection. Not typically serious
Impetigo symptoms
NON-BULLOUS (occurs on the face around the nose and mouth)
Begins as small red sores around the nose and mouth and quickly develops into blisters - this bursts
BULLOUS
Common in neonates
Fluid filled blisters
Quickly spreads before bursting
Appears as golden-brown crusts when it bursts
Impetigo referral
All cases are referred as it will require antibiotics
Impetigo treatment
Mild cases: topical fusidic cream
If severe/widespread: oral flucloxacillin
OTC treatment
For symptom relief,
e.g fever
- paracetamol
e.g itching
chlorphenamine
Advice
Highly contagious, children should be kept away from school until the rash clears
