Measles symptoms
MEASLES
- Red and sore eyes
- Fever
- Blotchy red-brown rash that starts behind the ears and spreads to the face, trunk and limbs
- greywish-white spots in the child’s mouth
Mump symptoms
Fever
Headache
Malaise
Swelling on both sides of the face
Rubella
Rash that starts on the face and spreads to trucks and limbs
Pink-red rash
Management of MMR
All caps of measles, mumps and rubella must be referred
Also notifiable diseases
MMR vaccine
First dose:
When the child is 1 year
Second dose:
When the child is 3 years and 4 months
MMR symptomatic relief
After seeing the doctor, patient can be offered paracetamol or ibuprofen
Advice
Children with rubella should be kept away from pregnant women
Avoid acidic drinks in mumps - irritates already swollen parotid glands
Keep hydrated
MMR and school off days
Measles (most dangerous)
Contagious for 4 days after rash appears
Mumps
contagious 5 days after swelling appears
Rubella
contagious 6 days after rash appears
