Whitehead Chapter 5 Flashcards
Apostolic succession
The bishops of the Church, through their ordination, form an uninterrupted, unbroken chain of succession, historically traceable to the Twelve Apostles.
Church
The assembly of people God has called together from the ends of the earth. This word has three meanings: the people God gathers together, the local church (diocese), and the liturgical assembly. It is also the name given to a building used for public Christian worship.
Bride of Christ
Christ described himself as the bridegroom and the Church as his bride. This symbolism represents the intimate union between Christ and the members of his Mystical Body, the Church
Elect
Those chosen by God to receive redemption.
Heaven
The dwelling place of God
Hell
The dwelling place of Satan
Indefectability
The Church to be without error until the end of time
Infallibility
The quality of the pope to speak without error
Final judgment
The final appearance of God, to judge those who are worthy and those who are not.
Ex Cathedra
The chair of Peter, it indicates infallibility of the Pope.
EXTRA ECCLESIAM NULLA SALUS
Latin for: there is no salvation outside the Church
Invincible Ignorance
The state of lacking the knowledge of the Church, or of a specific sinful action. In this state, any sins committed are not your own, as you have no way of knowing they are wrong.
