White Balance Flashcards
What is white balance?
Relates to how the camera reads colour I different types of light.
What is light sources measured in?
Kelvin
Warmer colour lights…
Have lower colour temperature (low Kelvin number)
Cooler colour lights…
Have higher colour temperature (high Kelvin number)
What is a colour cast?
Refers to a visible colour tint to an image, usually one that is unwanted.
When does colour cast occur?
When the white balance is inaccurate or light is contaminated with a colour such as in the instance of bouncing from a coloured surface
Automatic White Balance setting
camera automatically determines white balance settings, doesn’t work well in extreme situations
Tungsten setting
Use when photographing in homes lit by artificial light to add cooler tones to compensate for too many warm tones
Fluorescent setting
Use when photographing in fluorescent lighting, adds warm colours to compensate for cool colours. Example in a office
Daylight setting
Use when direct sunlight is hitting subject to add warm tones
Cloudy setting
Use on overcast days and/or with portrait. Adds warmer hues which are often desirable in landscape and portraits
Shade setting
Use when subject is covered in shade. adds more red/orange tones to compensate for bluer tones found in shade
