What is incident light?
Is the light that falls on a subject. It can be from natural lighting, artificial lighting source or can be reflecting off another surface
What is reflected light?
Reflected light is light that reflects off the subject.
What is specular reflection?
Light that reflects off a smooth surface
What is diffuse reflection?
Light that reflects off a rough surface
Hard/ Direct light
High contrast between highlight and shadows producing very sharp defined shadows and edges.
Soft/ Diffuse light
Low contrast, softening light and dark areas producing mild shadows and soft edges more of a gradient between shadows and highlights
High key lighting
Bright lighting to reduce or completely blow out dark shadows in the image
Low key lighting
Shooting dark-coloured scenes, and emphasizing natural or artificial light only on specific areas in the frame
Back lighting
Positioning the main light source for a photograph beside the primary source
Rim lighting
Behind subject that exposes the outline or rim of the subject with light, creating mysterious effect
Contre-jour lighting
Strong backlighting to alter the appearance of our subject in an eye-catching way
