Exposure Flashcards
What is the exposure Triangle?
A tool used to help balance aperture, shutter speed and ISO to achieve appropriate exposure
What is aperture?
Refers to the size of the opening in the lens of the camera, affecting the depth of field and exposure in a image
Wide aperture affect
A small f-number has been used to make a wide aperture, this then means more light is let into the camera meaning a shallow depth of field can be created.
What is a shallow depth of field?
Only one depth able to be in focus, one subject focus rest of the image is out of focus
Narrow aperture affect
A large f-number being used making a small/ narrow aperture. This means less light is let into the camera allowing a wide depth of field to be created.
What is a wide depth of field?
Whole image is in focus, meaning detail can be seen in everything
What is shutter speed?
Refers to the amount of time that the shutter is open for, a fast or a slow shutter speed can impact the final image affect
What does a fast shutter speed do?
Used to freeze time and have no motion blur in an image making the image crisp, it also can be used to balance out a wide aperture.
What does a slow shutter speed do?
Used to capture motion blur in an image, as the shutter is open for longer. Can create direction of the subject or camera. Also used to balance out a small aperture.
What is ISO?
Refers to the light sensitivity of an cameras film or image sensor chip
Affects of a low ISO
Image is smooth with no visible noise, a low ISO is used in brighter environments as the ISO does not have to work hard to see something.
Affects of a high ISO
Used for dark environments, however a too high ISO will mean that there will be visible grain/noise being created on the image meaning a inappropriate ISO has been used.
What is under-exposed?
Refers to when not enough light has been able to reach the film or image señor chip resulting in a photo that is too dark
What is over-exposed
Refers to when too much light has been able to reach the film or image señor chip resulting in a photo that is too bright and looks washed out
