Lenses Flashcards
What is focal length
Focal length is the distance (measured in millimeters) between the point of convergence of your lens and the sensor or film recording the image
Longer focal length means…
The narrower the angle of view and higher the magnification
Shorter focal length means…
The wider the angle of view and the lower the magnification
Wide angle lens
Capture wider shots, used for landscape photography
Telephoto lens
Captures far objects, adds background blur. Good for portraits
Macro lens
Captures close-up details, higher focal length allows you to be farther from subject. Allows to capture wildlife
Prime lens
Prime means focal length is fixed (can’t zoom), sharper images, adds background blur
Zoom lens
Adjustable focal length, useful for moving subjects eg weddings, however lower quality photos
Fisheye lens
Is an ultra wide-angle lens that produced strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image.
What are filters?
High quality glass or resin and when attached to the front of a lens are used to block certain colours or type of light coming into lens
Neutral density filters
Reduces or modifies the intensity of all wavelengths or colours of light equally, giving no change in hue of colour renditions
Polarising filters
Reduces glare, from water, roads, windows
