Contributions of Mary Whiton Calkins.
APA - first female president of the APA.
Harvard - did not receive a PhD at Harvard despite writing thesis and doing everything else.
Functionalism - she was a functionalist as she studied with James. Most of her work was regarding the association of ideas and dreaming.
Contributions of Karen Horney.
No Freud - was around much later, so did not have any direct training with him.
Later Psychoanalyst - believed that turmoil in interpersonal relationships is what creates neuroses, particularly true for children.
Culture Emphasis - this would have likely meant that she would focus on Dora’s parents being negligent cf. Freud’s focus on sexual desires which comes from his emphasis on biology. Classic nature versus nurture debate.
Sexism - thought penis envy was due to male bias and stated that they saw so many hysterical women they don’t know what a normal woman is like.
Contributions of Christine Ladd-Franklin.
Muller/Helmholtz - student of these two, where she learned about psychophysics. Completed PhD reqs early on but not awarded until she was 79 because sexism.
Colour vision - in spite of this, her theory of how we perceive colour is still a commonly taught theory now.
Teacher - becomes a teacher at Vasser and is focussed on getting young women interested in psychology.
Cigars and sexism - banned from Titchener’s Experimentalist meetings along with all other women because they didn’t want to avoid swearing and cigars. They hid under tables and eventually (technically) fought this rule.
Contributions of Margaret Floy Washburn.
First PhD - the first female PhD graduate in the history of psychology. Later becomes president of the APA.
Teacher - long time teacher at Vasser, over 30 years educating women there.
Comparative - published a textbook on comparative psychology of intelligence and ability.
Perception & Imagery - also published work regarding these topics as well as motor theory of consciousness and empathy. Diverse and prolific.
Contributions of Lillian Moller Gilbreth.
Large family - so she must be efficient. Raises 12 children with her husband and continues to do so after his death.
Kitchen/IBM - her efficiency leads her to revolutionise the modern kitchen and IBM’s work desks.
Professorship - full professor of engineering due to her contributions despite being psychologist.
Wars - Vocal about having women work during the wars. Presidents had her lead programs to figure out what women could do.
