Wheel Alignments Flashcards
Which adjustment should be done first on an alignment?
Caster
Which adjustment should be done last on an alignment?
Toe
What is the maximum caster degree variance allowed between left and right sides
5 degrees
What is the maximum camber degree variance allowed between left and right sides
5 degrees
How much negative camber is usually in front?
0.5 - 1 degrees
How much negative camber is usually in real?
0.8 - 1.3 degrees
What is Steering Axis Inclination (SAI)
locates the vehicle weight to the inside or outside of the vertical centerline of the tire
What is scrub radius?
The distance between the center line of the tire and the intersection of SAI
What is Ackerman angle?
amount of toe-out present in turns
What can incorrect camber settings cause?
tire wear, ball joint play, wheel bearing play and/or pulling to one side
What can too much positive caster cause?
hard steering, road shock and/or wheel shimmy
What can too much negative caster cause?
wander, weaving and/or instability at high speeds
What can unequal caster cause?
pulling to one side
What can incorrect SAI cause?
instability, poor steering returnability, pull to of lesser inclination and/or hard steering
What can incorrect toe settings cause?
tire wear and/or noise when turning
