Steering Systems Flashcards
When were collapsible steering columns introduce?
1968
What are the 2 types of steering systems?
Rack & Pinion and Parallelogram
What interior component can produce a clunking noise when doing a dry park test?
Intermediate shaft
What are 2 types of Rack & Pinion designs?
Centre take off and End take off
What is the gear ratio range of Rack & Pinions?
12:1 - 24:1
What are the 3 main groups of power assisted steering systems?
Rack & Pinion, Integrated Piston and External Pinion
Which steering system uses a recirculating ball steering gear?
Parallelogram
What controls the amount of assist in most power steering systems?
Torsion bar
How does a low steering gear ratio act?
Provide better driver feedback and feel but at increased effort
How does a high steering gear ratio act?
Provide easier but less precise steering
What type of steering systems do vehicles with solid front axles, front live axles, or twin I-beam suspensions use?
Cross-steer or Haltenberger linkage
Which steering system (Rack & Pinion and Parallelogram) is lighter and uses fewer components?
Rack & Pinion
What is rack-to-pinion preload/lash?
Amount of clearance between the rack & pinion teeth
What is a DCV?
A directional control valve, actuated by the torsion bar, that directs the oil pressure to the left or right power chamber to steer the vehicle
What is the purpose of the 2 (large and small) diameter power steering hoses?
Larger pressure hose is at the pump end acting as a reservoir and as an accumulator absorbing pulsations
Smaller return hose reduces the effects of kickback from the gear itself
What are the first 2 things to be inspected when adjusting steering?
1st; bearing preload. 2nd; sector-over-center preload
What could cause a low reading on a power steering pressure test?
faulty power steering pump
What could cause a high reading on a power steering pressure test?
faulty pressure relief valve
What is the most common style of pump found in a Rack & Pinion?
Vane Pump
What can produce clunking noises (normally found inside vehicle) during a dry park test?
intermediate shaft
What components can affect the TOE setting of the vehicle?
Tie rods, center links, drag links, pitman arm, idler arm
How much pressure is present in a hydraulic assist system during idle and no steering wheel input?
30-150PSI
How much pressure is present in a hydraulic assist system during idle with steering wheel input?
600-800PSI
How much pressure is present in a hydraulic assist system during idle with steering wheel input maxed out?
1200-1500PSI
How much pressure should the pressure hose be able to handle?
2200PSI
How many amps can a electric power steering use?
75A
