WHAT'S THE MATTER?: CHANGING STATE Flashcards
Give 3 ways matter can change state and give an example of each type of change
Melting - ice
Evaporation - water
Freezing - water
What is the word given to the process where a SOLID changes to a GAS without becoming a liquid
SUBLIMATION
Who first suggested Particle Theory?
DEMOCRITUS
Who is the Brownian Motion named after?
Robert Brown, a Scottish botanist who observed that each grain of pollen was ‘filled with particles’ that were ‘very evidently in motion’.
A solid has… 3
- Particles which are packed very closely together
- Particles which are arranged in a regular pattern
- Particles which can only vibrate
A liquid has… 2
- The particles move around by not very quickly
2. The particles are quite close together
A gas has…4
- Particles which move around very quickly
- Particles which move very fast in all directions
- Particles which diffuse very quickly
- Particles are easy to compress
What is DIFFUSION (of gas)?
When gas particles are moving and mixing without being stirred or shaken
How does the particle theory explain diffusion in liquids?
Liquids have more space between each particle than solids which results in quicker diffusion.
Which is faster, gas or liquid diffusion and why?
Gas because the particles are further apart meaning more available spaces to be filled
Why does diffusion in a hot liquid take place faster than in a cold one?
Because the heat gives the particles more energy to move
