CELLS: SPECIALISED CELLS Flashcards
Nerve Cells are also known as?
Neurons
Why are nerve cells very long?
Because they carry messages known as impulses from one part of the body to another
Why are Red Blood Cells red?
Because they have a red chemical in them which combines with the oxygen they carry
Why don’t red blood cells have a nucleus?
So they have extra room for more hemoglobin so they can carry more oxygen to every cell in the body
What shape are red blood cells?
Disc shaped
What are CILIATED EPITHELIAL CELLS? - 3
Looks like a tiny rug
- Cells that have hair at the top to move things across them.
- They line the tubes down to your lungs to carry mucus and dust away.
- They also line the oviduct (egg tube) that carries eggs from the ovary.
What are SPERM CELLS?
Male sex cells made in the testes and used in reproduction
Describe a SPERM CELL - 3 points
- It has a head with a nucleus
- A middle portion which contains the energy
- A tail for swimming
Describe an EGG CELL - 4 point
- Female sex cells made in the ovaries
- Each egg cell has a nucleus and
- A yolk which is a food supply
- One egg is released into the oviduct once every 28 days
Describe PALISADE CELLS - 3
- Found at the top of leaves
- Have lots of chloroplasts which contain a chemical called chlorophyll
- They use chlorophyll and light from the sun to turn carbon dioxide into sugar - this process is called PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Describe ROOT HAIR CELLS
- Take water out of the soil for the plant to use
2. Their elongated shape gives them a very big surface so they can take in as much water as possible
