CELLS Flashcards
Name the 3 parts of an animal cell
- Cytoplasm
- Nucleus
- Cell membrane
What happens in the cytoplasm?
Most chemical processes take place here and are controlled by enzymes
What happens in the nucleus?
It controls what happens in the cell and carries genetic information
What does the cell membrane do?
It controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
What are the 7 parts of a microscope?
- Stage
- Eyepiece lens
- Objective lens
- Coarse focus
- Lamp
- Fine focus
- Clips
Who was Robert Hooke?
An astronomer, physicist and naturalist who built and used the first microscope - he gave the name to the cell
How should you handle a microscope? - 3
- Carry it with one hand underneath and
- One hand on the arm
- Never touch the glass of the lenses
Name 3 common mistakes with a microscope
- You should have a single layer of cells not folded over
- Try to ensure no air is trapped between the specimen and cover slip
- Ensure the slide is in focus
Name the 6 parts of a plant cell
- Cell membrane
- Cytoplasm
- Nucleus
- Chloroplast
- Vacuole
- Cell wall
What does the chloroplast do?
It contains the green pigment that traps light energy for making food
What does the cellulose/cell wall do?
It gives the cell shape and support
What does the vacuole do? - 2
It contains water and sugars which are called cell sap. This gives the cell support, making it firm.
What solution do you drop onto your cells before putting under a microscope?
Iodine solution
Why does an onion have no chloroplast?
Because it grows underground and does not need to absorb light to make food
Name 3 things animal and plant cells have in common
- Have a nucleus
- Have a cell membrane
- Have cytoplasm
