Basics of PA
Define physical activity
Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure
Why is it so hard to improve physical activity?
It is a societal issue; a population-based, multi-sectoral, multi-disciplinary, culturally-relevant approach is needed
How does exercise differ from physical activity?
Physical activity could be walking, hoovering, gardening, whilst exercise is planned, structured, repetitive and purposeful - i.e. working out and sports
What are the PA guidelines for children under the age of 5?
Over 180 minutes/day; should target all major muscles groups
What are the general benefits of PA for young children?
Improves bone health, movement, coordination and social skills
What are the PA guidelines for children ages 5-18?
Over 60 minutes/day, with 3 days minimum muscle and bone strengthening
What are PA guidelines for adults age 19-64?
Over 150 mins/week of MPA in bouts of >10 mins OR over 75 mins/week of VPA OR combo, with at least 2 days/week of muscle strengthening exercise

Over 150 mins/week of MPA in bouts of >10 mins OR over 75 mins/week of VPA OR combo, with at least 2 days/week of neuromotor exercise

Decreases CVD risk, falls, stroke, T2DM, delays onset of dementia, improves cognitive function
