Physical inactivity Flashcards

Basics of PIA and sedentary behaviour

1
Q

What is physical inactivity?

A

Behavioural pattern that reduces daily PA time; characterised by lack of PA, lack of movement, prolonged sitting, prolonged periods with no muscular activity, achieving defined exercise goals but otherwise inactive

Q

Why has physical activity historically decreased?

A

When we were hunter-gatherers, natural selection favoured those with high PA and fitness, as well as having thrifty genes for storage. Now we still have thrifty genes, but no longer have the same levels of activity, leading to increased glucose and fatty acids

Q

What is physical fitness?

A

A set of attributes/characteristics that people have/achieve that relates to the ability to perform PA; an ability to perform daily activities with vigour; demonstration of traits + capacities that are associated w/ low risk of premature development of hypokinetic diseases
