2
Q

what is starlings law/ how does stroke volume increase during exercise

A

during exercise increase in venous return, greater diastolic filling of the heart, therefore cardiac muscle stretches resulting in more forceful contraction resulting in increased ejection fraction/stroke volume

what is cardiovascular drift

A

progressive decrease in stroke volume and arterial blood pressure with a rise in heart rate

Q

why does cardiovascular drift occur

A

due to prolonged exercise in a warm environment, blood plasma is lost in the sweat therefore reducing venous return and stroke volume, to maintain cardiac output heart rate has to increase

Q

what is arteriovenous oxygen difference

A

difference between oxygen content of the arterial blood arriving at the muscles and that of the venous blood leaving the muscles

6
Q

why does arteriovenous difference increase during exercise

A

as more oxygen is extracted by muscles to be used for energy, regular training increases this meaning performers can extract a greater amount of oxygen from the blood
