venous return Flashcards
what is venous return
the return of blood to the right side of the heart via the vena caba
what are the 5 venous return mechanisms and explain them
skeletal muscle pump- muscles contracting and relaxing press in the nearby veins and cause a pumping effect pushing blood towards the heart. Respiratory pump- the pressure changes in the chest compress nearby vines and push blood back to the heart.
pocket valves- prevent back flow of blood
smooth muscle pump- contract to push blood back toward the heart
the pumping of the heart results in suction which pulls blood back towards the heart
what is blood pressure
the force exerted by the blood against the blood vessel wall. blood flow x resistance
what is systolic and diastolic pressure and how does it relate to oxygen
systolic- ventricles are contracting
diastolic- ventricles are relaxing
during exercise the heart contracts with more force so blood leaves the heart under high pressure, increasing venous return and the speed that blood travels around the body
