what is an attachment?
a strong, loving relationship that forms in early childhood between a baby and its caregiver
how can a person be a babies caregiver?
- looks after the baby for long periods of time
- responds when they are hungry or need comforting
- makes them feel safe
what are the 3 behaviours babies display when they have a strong attachment to their caregiver?
- safe base
- separation anxiety
- stranger anxiety
what is a safe base?
when children have an attachment to their caregiver, they treat their caregiver as a safe base.
- someone they can quickly turn to whenever they’re scared or anxious
what is seperation anxiety?
children who are attached to a caregiver become upset when their caregiver leaves them and displays separation anxiety. and when children display separation anxiety, other people cant comfort them, only their caregiver can make them happy again.
what is stranger anxiety?
when babies feel distress and anxiety when around unfamiliar people and show a preference with being with their caregiver rather than strangers.
