What evidence is there for climate change Flashcards
How are Ice cores from Antarctica and Greenland an exampl of evidence for natural climate chanhe
The snow that fell in previous years that are now ice are analysed and have higher CO2 levls which means warmer temps
How are Landforms shaped by Ice during cold glacial periods
Deep U shaped valleys now with Misfit streams and hollows filled by lakes
How are histporical sources an example of natural climate change
In the 17th centuary a diary stated that the River Thames froze
What do each of the milankovitch’s cycles represent
An increase or decreased distnace from the sun
What is Eccentricty( a cycle)
Every 100,000 years the earths orbit changes from alomost circular to oval and back again
It gets warmer in the more oval and colder in the circular
What is precession (cycle)
Over a period of 26,000 years
The axis wobbles which changes the severity of seasons
What is Axial Tilt
Every 41,000 the tilt of the earth moves back and forth between 21.5 Degree- 24.5
The higher the angle the higher the temperature
Howcan volcanoes effect climate change
The ash released by the eruption blocks out the sun which reduces the earths temp
What is the greenhouse effect
CO2, Methane, water vapour and nitrous oxides trap heat
This allows short wave radiation from the sun through the earth but traps the long wave radiation(heat)
What are the human impacts of climate change
The enhanced green house effect-The amounts of green house gasses have increased whihc is due to human activity
ACs in the EU Japan and the US contribute to 1/3 of all emitions
What are sunspots and what is the effect of more sunspots.
Sunspots are dark/ reddish spots that appear on the surface of the sun More sunspots mean the Sun is more effective at giving off heat.
How long is the cycle for sunspots and what does it cause?
There is an 11-year cycle for sunspots which then causes variations in solar insolation depending on where it is in the cycle Increased sunspot activity may lead to higher sea temperatures
