What Are They? Flashcards
What are the qualities of enzymes?
Speed up the rate of reaction by acting as biological catalysts
Are not chemically altered
Not used up
Do not make a reaction occur
Do not alter the amount of product formed
Only a small amount needed to alter the rate
What are the different categories of enzymes?
Intracellular- catalyse reactions within the cells, e.g DNA polymerase
Extracellular- outside of cells, e.g digestive enzymes
What is a catalyst?
Speed up a chemical reaction without being used up in the reaction itself
Why are enzymes useful?
They make reactions work more quickly
Examples of intracellular enzymes
Hydrogen peroxide is the toxic by product of several cellular reactions. Can kill cells
Catalase works inside cells to catalyse the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to harmless oxygen and water
Extracellular enzyme examples
Amylase is found in the saliva. Secreted in the mouth by cells in the salivary glands. It catalysed the hydrolysis of starch into maltose in the mouth
Trypsin catalysed the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. Produced by the pancreas and secrete by the small intestine
What are enzymes?
A protein that speeds up the rate of metabolic reactions
