Activation Energy Flashcards
What do enzymes do?
Reduce the amount of activation energy needed, making the reactions happen at a lower temperature
Speeds up the rate of reaction
What is an enzyme- substrate complex?
When a substance binds to an enzymes active site, an enzyme substrate complex is formed
This lowers the activation energy
2 substrate molecules need to be joined
Attaching to the enzyme holds them close together
Reducing any repulsion between the molecules
So can bond more easily
Catalysing a breakdown reaction
Fitting into the active site puts strain on bonds in the substrate
Means the substrate molecule breaks up more easily
What is activation energy?
Certain amount of energy need to be supplied to the chemical before the reaction will start
Heat
What is metabolism?
The sum total of all of the chemical reactions that happen in the body
What are the 2 main types of chemical reaction?
Catabolic
Anabolic
What are anabolic reactions?
Reactions that make larger molecules from smaller ones
What are catabolic reactions?
Splitting molecules up into smaller ones
