Mali Empire
The Mali Empire controlled all of the salt trade along the trade routes and was the second largest and most successful empire between 1230 and 1600.
Ghana Empire
Lasted from about 300-1100 CE. Controlled alot of Africa at the time.
Songhai Empire
The Songhai empire was the largest empire in African history, with several thousand cultures under its control. They rose to power in the 15th century after the Mali Empire weakened and eventually fell.
Berber
Mansa Musa
Ruler of the Mali empire, he was the richest man to ever live. He went on pilgrimage to Mecca spreading his name and his riches with him.
Ibn Battuta
Ibn Battuta was a Maghrebi traveler, explorer and scholar. From 1325 to 1354, Ibn Battuta visited most of North Africa, the Middle East, East Africa, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, China, the Iberian Peninsula, and West Africa. Near the end of his life, he dictated an account of his journeys, titled A Gift to Those Who Contemplate the Wonders of Cities and the Marvels of Travelling.
Trans Saharan Caravan Trade
Trade going along the Saharan desert. Since the desert is so desert and dangerous, it is travelled in caravans, or large groups of people with camels.
Djenne
Large Mali city. Used for trading and learning.
