SD believe that it is the governments responsibility to solve poverty by increasing welfare provision and increasing minimum wage. Associated with the post war government (bee ridge report) up until 1979.

They are for means tested benefits as they believe generosity of the welfare state makes people self reliant and undermines personal responsibility. This is associate with the 79-97 labour government and the 2010-2015 coalition government.

Money is saved which can be reinvested into the economy to create jobs however the means testing causes the poverty trap whereby people are suffering form poverty whilst being employed.
