EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT Flashcards
Why is education seen as important in development
It is seen as essentially in breaking inter generational chains of poverty. It provides people with knowledge to gain control over their own lives and makes it more difficult for them to be exploited.
What is the modernisation theorists perspective on education
They argue that a western style education system is essential to spread modern values and human capital which can be a basis for modernisation. Hoselitz regards education as one of the four motors of development; it is estimated that countries who devote at least 4% of their gdp are successful.
Outline the dependency theory on education
They regard education as serving a form of cultural imperialism imposing western values on the developing world. Argues that education was one of the main ways colonial powers exercise control over their colonies.
Why is girls education so important
As 2/3s of 793 million illiterate people are women
And education for women in the long term reduces poverty, as women are more likely to educate their own children ending cycles of illiteracy.
