Q

Outline Barrets research

A

Cuts in CO2 in the West are misleading as the CO2 output has been increased in the developing world due to a shift in manufacturing. For example CO2 emissions fell by 194 million tonnes in 2012 whereas they rose by 280 million tonnes created abroad during the manufacture of goods imported to Britain.

Q

Give three facts on deforestation

A

12-15 million hectares of forest are lost each year according to WWF
DEFORESTATION CAUSES MAJOR RISK FOR BIODIVERSITY AS 80% of the worlds documented species live in forests
CO2 emissions from deforestation account for 1/3 of total carbon dioxide emissions

Q

What is the neo-liberal solution to environmental problems.

A

The solutions lie in the extension of free market capitalism as solutions will be generated as society progresses for example electric cars. Also, privatisation if public goods can resolve problems as private owners of land would be more likely to protect it.

Q

What is the view of neo-Malthusian/modernist on development and the environment

A

Population growth threatens the environment the most as more and more land has to farmed which means further loss of soil and desertification. These problems can be resolved through social and cultural change. So poverty is the main cause

Q

What is the view of anti-Malthusian/dependency theory on development and the environment

A

They believe the fate of the environment lies in the hands of wealthy countries. Wealthy countries consume much more than the poor and produce much more damage to the enviroment. For example, a poor family may take firewood from a forest but it takes a timber company with an export market to devestate large areas of rainforest
