The Effects Of Globalisation Flashcards
State the five effects of globalisation on work
Fewer standerdised jobs and more non standard jobs of lower quality
More outsourcing and potential employment (companies manufacturing where labour costs are low eg: Indian call centres)
More migrant workers (global market more competition)
Growing insecurity at work:the casualisation if the work force (2014-1.6 mil temp workers in UK)
TNCs (moved factories to developing world)
mcdonaldization (more and more jobs are like the standerdised, predictable and controlled processes of fast food chains)
Describe core workers in the primary labour market
Full time, permanent, skilled, well trained, well paid, good promotion prospects, career opportunities Usually occupied by white males.
Describe periphery workers and the secondary labour market
Lower skill levels, less training, lower pay, less promotion. More disposable. Feminists point out that women are more likely to work here and it usually consists of migrant workers.
State and outline the three trends associated with globalisation according to Lynda gratin
Hollowing out of work: middle skilled jobs are most vulnerable. For example, secretaries are vulnerable as they can be replaced by technology.
Globalisation of virtual work: growth of internet based distance learning platforms. More competition for jobs as work becomes global.
Rise of the transitional: individuals who are highly geographically mobile are able to relocate at any time. Cosmopolitan global elite are the talented and educated workers who are employable all over the shop
