Weight Flashcards
Define Weight
The gravitational force of a planet on an object
- by this definition, it is apparent that since the gravitational force of each planet on an object is different, then the weight of an object on each planet is different
Equation for Weight & it unit
Weight (in a certain place)
= mass of object x gravity (in that place)
- W= mg
- Unit= Newton, N
- The unit for gravity is either ms (-2) (as it is actually acceleration due to gravity) or Nkg (-1)
Mass vs. Weight
•Mass- A bass quantity
Weight- A force
•Mass- measured using a scale or balance
Weight- measured using a spring balance AKA newtonmeter
•Mass- A measurement of the amt of matter in an object
Weight- the gravitational force of a planet on an object
•Mass- measured in kg
Weight- measured in N
•Mass- Does NOT change from place to place as the amt of matter in an object is INDEPENDENT on gravity
Weight- Changes from place to place as it is DEPENDENT on gravity & the gravitational force changes from place to place
