Energy Flashcards
Define Energy & its SI unit
-Energy is the ability or capacity to do work
- SI unit= Joule, J
Mechanical Energy (Types of Energy)
Mechanical Energy=
Potential Energy + Kinetic Energy
Em = Ep + Ek
Potential Energy (Types of Energy)
- Potential Energy is the energy a body possesses due to its state or position
- Gravitational Potential Energy is the energy a body possesses due to its height above the Earth’s surface
When we calculate potential energy we actually calculate Gravitational pe. - Ep= m(mass) g(gravity) h(height)
- ^ (change in potential energy)Ep=
m g ^h(change in height)
Therefore in Ep is dependent on change in height - If the body has no height above Earth’s surface then it has no Ep
- If h=0, Ep=0
Kinetic Energy (Types of Energy)
Kinetic Energy is the energy a body processes due to its motion
-Ek= 1/2 m(mass) v(velocity squared)
- Ek is dependent on the motion
Therefore velocity of the body
Electromagnetic Energy
The energy of radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, light waves, ultraviolet waves, x-waves & gamma waves
Chemical Energy
The energy stored in the bonds of chemical compounds
Sound Energy
The energy transferred by vibrating particles of a sound wave
Thermal Energy
The energy due to the motion of the particles of a body
Heat Energy
Thermal energy due to the process of being transferred from one point to a next, due to the temperature difference between them
Electrical Energy
The energy resulting from charged particles being in electric fields
Nuclear Potential Energy
The energy binding the particles of the nucleus of an atom
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can be transferred from one form to another
