What is power?
The ability to influence and make decisions that impact oneself and others. It is fluid and dynamic, always shifting.
What are the forms of power?
Power can take many forms, including social, cultural, economic, political, and systemic.
How does power affect wellbeing?
Those who have power tend to have better mental and physical wellbeing, while those with limited power may not have a voice.
What is privilege?
Benefits or advantages available to a group perceived to be part of a certain group, granted to those in power and denied to those being oppressed.
How is privilege structured?
Privilege is structural and prioritizes some groups over others, leading to experiences of both privilege and disadvantage.
What is oppression?
The unjust use of power or privilege against a less powerful or advantaged group, relying on structural and systemic power systems.
What is the cycle of oppression?
The cycle includes biased information, stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and oppression.
How does power relate to nursing?
Power dynamics exist in nursing relationships, such as teacher to student and nurse to patient or care client.
What are social identities?
Social identities are both internally created and externally applied, used to bestow benefits, power, or disadvantages.
What is positionality?
The social and political space we occupy, contextualizing our identity and influencing our worldview.
What influences worldview?
Worldviews are influenced by family, culture, religion, self-concept, and social norms, and develop through experiences and analysis.
What is the significance of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act 1988?
It recognizes the freedom of all Canadians to enhance and share their cultural heritage and promotes equitable participation in society. Encourages cultures to express themselves.
What is the difference between race and ethnicity?
Race refers to physical traits, while ethnicity refers to cultural identity and culture.
What are microaggressions?
Microaggressions are slight, often unintentional, discriminatory comments or actions. These can be cummaltive.
What roles do nurses have regarding Indigenous People of Canada?
Nurses should learn about Indigenous People, build authentic relationships, practice culturally safe ways, listen to patients, and advocate for them.

Certain biases that we are unaware of due to past expereince, beleifs and values, and hiddne stereotypes about a group.
