What does cisgender mean?
Gender identity aligns with sex assignment at birth.
What does transgender mean?
Gender identity that does not relate to birth gender.
What does nonbinary/genderqueer mean?
Identities that are beyond the male/female binary.
What are Two-Spirits?
A term used by indigenous peoples to refer to someone who embodies both masculine and feminine.
What is gender dysphoria?
Psychological distress related to incongruence between sex assignment and gender identity.
Term used in DSM 5
What is gender-affirming care?
Care that is not just for trans people; it includes cisgender hormone therapy, such as testosterone and menopause treatment.
What does gender-affirming healthcare encompass?
Any combination of social, legal, and medical measures that help people feel happy and safe in their gender.
Sex reassignment is covered by all provincal healthcare however requires a dignosis that is not covered.
What is required for sex reassignment surgery coverage in Canada?
Diagnosis of gender dysphoria by a psychiatrist and one other expert.
Surgery is covered by all provincial healthcare.
What are some challenges in accessing gender-affirming care?
Long waiting times for psychiatric care, age restrictions, and limited clinics offering surgery.
