Week Two (Part One) Flashcards
Disorders of the Intestine
List (General):
Malabsorption Syndrome Irritable Bowel Syndrome Crohn's Disease Ulcerative Colitis Infectious Colitis Diverticular Disease Diarrhea Constipation
Disorders of the Intestine
Malabsorption Syndrome (Causes):
Intraluminal maldigestion
Mucosal malabsorption
Lymphatic obstruction
Disorders of the Intestine
Malabsorption Syndrome Intraluminal Maldigestion (Describe):
Not digesting well
Disorders of the Intestine
Malabsorption Syndrome Mucosal Malabsorption (Describe):
Digestion is fine, but mucosal lining is damaged (e.g. Crohn’s Disease)
Disorders of the Intestine
Malabsorption Syndrome Lymphatic Obstruction (Describe):
Obstruction such as tumor of enlarged lymph nodes limiting digestion
Disorders of the Intestine
Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Mechanism (Pathology):
Exaggerated responses to stress, leading to motor activity.
Bouts of constipation and diarrhea. No damage or inflammation anywhere along the GI tract.
Disorders of the Intestine
Crohn’s Disease
Mechanism (Pathology):
Granulomatus inflammation type
All layers of the intestine are affected, leading to fistula
Submucosal is affected at the greatest extent
Bowel wall becomes thick and inflexible
Swollen regional lymph nodes
Disorders of the Intestine
Crohn’s Disease
Cause (Etiology):
Autoimmune disease that attacks the mucosa and submucosa (and sometimes muscle layer).
Disorders of the Intestine
Ulcerative Colitis
Mechanism (Pathology):
Confined to rectum and colon, starting from rectum and moving proximally (rectum, sigmoid colon, descending colon, transverse colon, ascending colon).
Affects mainly the mucosal layer, but can spread to all of the colon.
Formation of crypt abscesses, necrosis, ulceration.
Disorders of the Intestine
Ulcerative Colitis
Course of Disease:
Acute
Chronic
Intermittent
Disorders of the Intestine
Ulcerative Colitis
Complication:
Cancer
Disorders of the Intestine
Infectious Colitis (List):
Pseudomembranous Colitis
Epidemic Sporadic Colitis
Disorders of the Intestine
Pseudomembranous Colitis
Mechanism (Pathology):
Inflammation of the mucosa due to toxin
Disorders of the Intestine
Pseudomembranous Colitis Causative Agent (Etiology):
Clostridium difficile (C. Diff). A disruption of bacteria causing severe inflammation, swelling, and/or diarrhea.
Disorders of the Intestine
Pseudomembranous Colitis
Risk Factor:
Antibiotic therapy
