Week Seven: Language Development Flashcards
What is language
A code of structural properties, accompanied by rules for comprehending utterances through arbitrary symbols
What are the five parameters of language
phonologic, morphologic, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic
What is grammar
a set of rules that set forth the correct standard of usage in a language
What is syntax
the study of sentences and their
structure, and the constructions within
sentences. Syntax tells us what goes where
in a sentence.
What is morphology
the internal organisation of words; i.e. bound morphemes: un, non, ing; and free morphemes: boy, run, car
What is phonology
Phonology is concerned with the rules governing the structure, distribution, and sequencing of speech sounds and the shape of syllables.
What is Semantics?
A system of rules governing the meaning or content of words and word combinations
What is pragmatics?
Pragmatics concentrates on the social use of language and on how you use language to achieve your communication goals. In other words, pragmatics is concerned with the way language is used to communicate rather than with either language form or with the meaning of what is said.
What is the reciprocity hypothesis?
large vocabulary makes you a better reader - being a better reader allows you to read more - reading more gives you a bigger vocabulary -
What is fast-mapping?
A cognitive process by which children quickly learn new words and make connections between those words and their meanings after only a brief exposure. This phenomenon often occurs in early language development, allowing children to grasp the meanings of words they hear in in context, even if they only hear them once or a few times.
What is slow-mapping?
Word meanings are gradually enriched over time through multiple encounters and practice with varying usage of the word.
What is language cognitive theory
Language acquisition results from the interaction between the child’s level of cognitive functioning and the child’s linguistic environment.
What is linguistic theory
Language acquisition is governed by universal grammatical rules common to all typically developing humans.
What is sociolinguistic theory
Children are born with biological capacities that facilitate language development, but interaction with sensitive linguistic partners is necessary for the linguistic system to develop successfully.
What is language behavioral theory
Children learn adult like language because it is rewarded through praise and response.
What is a language acquisition device
Genetically programmed brain function that helps learning all languages
