CABs

Contusion
bruise
- apply cold pack or ice
- elevate limb
- observe for signs of head swelling (head injury) emergency
Concussion
head trauma, brain has been jolted or shaken
- measure vital signs
- observe patient
- require provider assessment and possible radiology testing
Sprain
injury due to tearing of a tendon, ligament, or cartilage of a joint
- rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE)
diabetic coma (hyperglycemia)
high blood sugar
Insulin shock
hypoglycemia
Syncope
fainting
Epistaxis
noseblood
myocardial infarction

Cerebrovascular Accident
stroke

Equipment
AED & CPR supplies
changing a sterile dressing
- wash hands and don sterile or non-sterile gloves
- if stuck to wound, soak in sterile saline
- use a applicator to apply medication to the wound
- open dressing packages on the edges and don’t touch content or wound
Fracture
break in bone
Complete fracture
across entire bone
Incomplete fracture
through only part of bone
Comminuted
bone has broken into several fragments
Greenstick fracture
bone is bent, but only one side is fractured (mostly kids)
Closed fracture
no break in skin
Open fracture
break in skin
Anaphylaxis
severe allergic reaction
can result in shock
- provide basic life support
- administer oxygen and epinephrine
call 911
Acute Abdominal Pain
-general, symptom
- can be life-threatening
- obtain detailed CC
- nothing by mouth (NPO)
- may need emesis basin
- keep patient warm, don’t apply heat to abdomen
- monitor vital signs
bleeding
- internal or external
- amount depends on blood supply
- arterial bleeding medical crisis
- apply pressure
- elevate site
- apply ice
- limit movement
- monitor vital signs, observe for shock
