5 key aspects of self-disclosure

  • Listen ( Be sure client is ready for self disclosure. Be sure disclosure is relevant)
  • Immediately after, focus on application to client
  • Use “I” statements (use own self disclosure “I think” not “people think”
  • Describe your thoughts, feelings, behaviours
  • Be genuine esp. when using here and now
