Levels of prevention used in health promotion
A
- primordial level: at a distal level or preventing risk factors from existing (addressing issues before they become risk factors)
- Primary level: preventing or reducing risks (smoking prevention smoke programs)
- secondary level: stop or slow progression of illness (examining skin for signs of melonoma)
- Tertiary level: to limit disability, rehabilitate or restore ( counselling for someone apart of sexual violence)
- Quaternary: draws attention to identifying people who may be at risk for medical mishaps.

harm reduction is a philosophy and approach to health care delivery programs, or policies, implemented with the goal to protect health of and reduce secondary harm for individuals who engage in high risk activities that are associated with poor health outcomes.
