racism takes three forms, all of which impact health

  1. institutionalized racism: is how racism is embedded in institutions such as health care and education
  2. personally mediated racism: is prejudice and discrimination.
  3. internalized racism: is when those who are stigmatized accept these messages about their abilities and lack of worth.

systemic racism

A
  • Institutional racism, also known as systemic racism, is a form of racism that is embedded in the laws and regulations of a society or an organization.
  • is not about the individual but happened in society
  • for over a century, the central goals of Canada aboriginal policy were to eliminate, through a process of assimilation, cause aboriginal people cease to exist as a distinct legal, social, cultural, religious and racial entitles in Canada.

  • life expectancy is 7-8 years lower, due to higher infant mortality rates, and higher rates of injury and accidental death among aboriginal children, youth and young adults.
  • illness rates higher
  • social problems, from family violence to substance abuse are more common

  • inadequate housing
  • unemployment is high
