definition of race
defined as a socially constructed category used to classify human kind according to common ancestry and reliant on differentiation by physical characteristics such as colour of skin, hair, stature, and facial characteristics
- in Canada, ethnicity is often a polite term used for race
- categorizing people is a form of racism
racism takes three forms, all of which impact health
- institutionalized racism: is how racism is embedded in institutions such as health care and education
- personally mediated racism: is prejudice and discrimination.
- internalized racism: is when those who are stigmatized accept these messages about their abilities and lack of worth.
systemic racism
- Institutional racism, also known as systemic racism, is a form of racism that is embedded in the laws and regulations of a society or an organization.
- is not about the individual but happened in society
- for over a century, the central goals of Canada aboriginal policy were to eliminate, through a process of assimilation, cause aboriginal people cease to exist as a distinct legal, social, cultural, religious and racial entitles in Canada.
Microagrressions
Microagressions are everyday verbal, non verbal and environmental slights, snubs or insults , whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory or negative messages to target a person based solely upon their marginalized group membership.
social justice
- social justice is about fairness and means the equitable, or fair distribution of society’s benefits, responsibilities and their consequences.
- it is the view that everyones deserves equal rights and opportunities, and this includes the right to good health.
Race: impacts on health status
- life expectancy is 7-8 years lower, due to higher infant mortality rates, and higher rates of injury and accidental death among aboriginal children, youth and young adults.
- illness rates higher
- social problems, from family violence to substance abuse are more common
- fewer children graduate or attend post secondary schooling
- inadequate housing
- unemployment is high
