- encompasses sex, gender, identities and roles, sexual orientation, eroticism, pleasure, intimacy and reproduction.

A state of physical, emotional, mental and social well being relates to sexuality.

Gender Identity
how in your head you define and understand your gender based on the options for gender you know exist
Gender expression
the ways you demonstrate gender through your dress, actions and demeanour.
Biological sex
the physical parts of your body that we think of as either male or female.
heterosexism
the belief in the inherent superiority and “normality” of heterosexuality.
- it is the foundation for homophobia
what might LGBTQ Canadians experience
- fear of harassment, discrimination, violence
- difficulties finding accessible, competent services
- lack of knowledge about own health issues/risks
- higher burden of illness and poverty
- higher levels of stress, stigma and social isolation
what might family, friends, community be towards LGBTQ
- may reject or be abusive when a member comes out
- family may lack support
- friends, colleagues may come distant
- bullying, harassment is common in schools and workplaces
- ## few community programs to support health
Nursing responsibilities
- be aware of own values and beliefs, influences of family, religion and society
- convey a caring, open and non judgmental manner towards clients
- be tactful, sensitive, use appropriate language, be aware of non-verbal communication
- non judgmental communication
- avoid making assumptions about clients sexual orientation
