Week 8 - Musculoskeletal Flashcards
Flexion
bending a limb at the joint
Extension
straightening the limb at the joint
Abduction
moving a limb away from the midline of the body (sink of abducting - like being taken away)
Adduction
moving a limb toward the midline of the body (think of as “adding”)
Pronation
turning the forearm so that the palm is down
Supination
turning the forearm so that the palm is facing up
Circumduction
moving the arm in a circle around the shoulder
Inversion
moving the sole of the foot inward at the ankle
Eversion
moving the sole of the foot outward at the ankle
Rotation
moving the head around the central axis
Protraction
moving a body part forward and parallel to the ground
Retraction
moving a body part backward and parallel to the ground
Elevation
raising a body part
Depression
Lowering of a body part
An audible and palpable snap or click occurs as the mouth opens: abnormal or normal
normal
Nucleus pulposus
located in the centre of each vertebral disc. Made of soft semifluid, mucoid material that has the consistency of toothpaste
Rotator cuff
muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder
Glenohumeral joint
articulation of the humerous with the glenoid fossa of the scapula
audible and palpable crunching that accompanies movement
crepitation
Herberden’s and Bouchard’s nodes occur with?
osteoarthritis
cruiciate ligaments
crisscross within the knee and provide anterior and posterior stability and help control rotation
collateral ligaments
connect the join at both sides; they provide medial and lateral stability and prevent dislocation
Hallux valgus
the distal part of the great toe is directed away from the midline
is RA inflammatory or noninflammatory?
inflammatory
Pain is often worse in the morning with?
RA
Swan neck deformity
occurs with chronic RA and is characterized by ulnar drift of the fingers
Is RA local or systemic?
systemic
is osteoarthritis inflammatory or noninflammatory?
noninflammatory
is osteoarthritis localized or systemic?
localized
Osteoporosis
decrease in skeletal bone mass occurring when the rate of bone reabsorption is greater than that of bone formation
Epicondylitis
Also known as tennis elbow. Chronic disabling pain at the lateral epicondyle.
Carpal tunnel syndrome
interference with motor function as a result of compression of the median nerve
