Semiosis:
A sign is anything that communicates a meaning, that is not the sign itself, to the interpreter of the sign
Region as..
Region as: a process; time space specific; a domain of power relations
Gieryn and place and identity (2000) –> place and identity have elastic boundaries
means that place can be your favroite armchair, but also a building or a state or nation
Swyngedouw:
analysing the world from a given geographical scale, such as the local, regional, national or global, seems […] to be deeply antagonistic to apprehending the world in a dynamic, process- based manner
Hollowing out the nation state (Jessop)
the central government has become hollowed out as power is devolved to state and local governments (Stoker 1998)
Non profits, private firms, local governments form a network of dependence –> related to institutional thickness, and turn, related to neo endogenous development
Neal (2011):
Regions and Metropolitan areas are the competitive units, not nations. (2011). E.g. san francisco, new york

Vogtland (stoffelen)
Sticky regions
Zimmerbauer and Suttari
- -> regions ‘holds onto’ both human and nonhuman actants even after it loses its status in the legitimate regional structure. Due to this stickiness, deinstitutionalization is never complete — otherwise all regional consciousness would disappear entirely.
- -> related to politics of memory
