Q

Giddens

A

Self reflexivity - meaning creation is reflexive - we mould it. There are way more possibilities today to mould your own meaning. It commonly refers to the capacity of an agent to recognize forces of socialization and alter their place in the social structure.
Low or high reflexivity: shaped a lot by society and environment or not a lot

Q

Tuan

A

meanings change according to scale of place.
Experiential perspective: experience moulds sense of place

Modes of place: places are more tangible at lower scales while regions and nation-states are mostly symbolical as places: they are too large to know directly on a daily basis – dependent on processes of signification

Q

Stedman: Three general stances on places

A
  1. Direct effect model - essence of place is imbued in that place (genus loci)
  2. Meaning mediated model - meanings are based on environmental attributes. Physical setting provides limits upon which meaning is created
  3. Experiential model - experiences with landscape influence identity What is the difference between these two?. Basically saying place doesn’t matter for identity
