Week 8 Flashcards
Data Analysis?
It is a holistic approach (this for QUAL
- in QUANTITATIVE they use reductionist approach to analyse data (make it smaller)
It is the generation of themes, category and codes.
Types of Data Analysis
THEMATIC ANALYSIS
making categories and then testing if they are the same with other participants (coffee: taste or presentation of cup is important to the next person etc
CONTENT ANALYSIS
look at trends, at the words and their frequency (why don’t you exercise; each person - time, time, time, bachelor, kids, kids) see a trend.
It can then be quantified, thematic analysis can’t
- 8 of 10 people said time was a barrier etc.
RIGOUR
This is trustworthiness. Bias can’t be eliminated in qualitative research therefore we look for trustworthiness.
RIGOUR MEANS EVIDENCE HAS
- credibility
- transferability
- dependability (replicability)
- confirmability (confirmed by others)
How to improve Rigour
Strategies include
- purposive sampling
- triangulation (more than one way of collecting data)
- multiple coders (more than one person analyse the data)
- external observer (have an outsider to critique and give feedback)
- peer debrief (with someone out of the research)
- REFLEXIVITY
Examining and being aware of any influence the researcher might have the study and data
