Week 8 Flashcards
Characteristics of a project
- Temporary in nature
– Definite startand end date - Produce a unique product or result
- Completed when their goals are achieved within certain constraints
Project Management
Brings together a set of tools and techniques to describe organize, and monitor the work of project activities
Project managers
People responsible for managing project processes and applying the tools and techniques used to carry out the project activities
Engineering leaders
Manage complex technology projects
Triple Constraints are…
- Budget/cost
- Scope
- Time/Schedule
Quality is affected by
Triple Constraints
Triple constraints are project baselines because
Change to one element affects the other
Poor project management
- Reputation Damage
- Waste of resources
- Loss of trust
- Lost revenues or contracts
Project Management Processes
- Initiating
- Planning
- Executing
- Monitoring and Controlling
- Closing
Scope
The product, service, or results of the project
- Describes what we will deliver to the costumer
- Develop a detailed description of the project
In scope
Something that is part of the project or tasks that must be completed to meet the objectives
Out of scope
Anything that is not included in the project or task
Project Scope Statement
- Includes all requirements and specification details for the products of our project
- Developed by project team to describe what they will produce as part of the process.
Deliverables
- Measurable outcomes, measurable results, or specific items that must be produced to consider the project completed
- Considered critical success factor
- Quantifiable good or service that must be provided open compleiton of a project.
Milestones
- Major accomplishments of the project and mark the completion of a deliverable
- Arranged in a logical order and determine whether dependencies exist among activities
Ex of a milestone
Completion of a prototype
Testing…
Timelines
The engineering design process requires planning to coordinate team members and task generating, timing, and sequencing.
Risks
- Risks are uncertainty
- Can present future opportunities as well as future threats
Probability
describes the potential of the risk event occurrence
Impact
describes the effects or consequences
Strategies to deal with risks
- Avoid
- Transfer
- Mitigate
- Accept
Gantt chart
- Project Scheduling tool
- Include dependencies
(eg, preceding tasks that need to be completed before the tasks of interest can begin) - Include who will work on each task
Pros of Gantt chart
- Easy to understand
- Guideline of dependencies and how long each task should take
Cons of Gantt Charts
- May not reflect how much time each task will take
- It may be hard to illustrate task dependencies
- Set milestones might prevent creativity and innovation
How to work on your Gantt Chart timeline
- Start backwards (think about imposed deadlines)
- Consider all tasks and subtasks
- Estimate task durations
- Assign team members to each task
- Update the Gantt Chart as the project progresses
