12 hour time vs 24 hour time uses?
- 12-hour time is most commonly used in everyday communication.
- 24-hour time is used on timetables and for more official purposes.
In everyday communication you can add the following words to express the equivalent of am and pm:
- REMEMBER WITH -s at the END
- morgens
(in the morning) - nachmittags
(in the afternoon) - abends
(in the evening) - nachts
(at night)
Eine Minute hat sechzig Sekunden.
One minute has sixty seconds.
Eine Stunde hat sechzig Minuten.
An hour has sixty minutes.
Ein Tag hat vierundzwanzig Stunden.
One day has twenty-four hours.

How to write 12 hour time?

Es ist “eins”

- Es ist Viertel nach hour
- Es ist Viertel vor hour
- Es ist minutes nach hour
- Es ist minutes vor hour
- Es ist halb hour
- Es ist hour (morgens, abend)
To ask the time of day, say:
Wie spät ist es? = What time is it?
how late is it?
Wie viel Uhr ist es? = What time is it?
how much o’clock is it?
To ask what time something will happen / take place, say:
Um wie viel Uhr …?
At what time …?
at how much of oclock
Question: what the time of day,… or what time something will happen / take place.
To answer, say:
*um, and then the time
um zehn Uhr … um halb acht … um vierzehn Uhr zwanzig
at 10 o’clock … at 7:30 … at 2:20pm
