Q

how do germans count rooms?

A

When Germans describe the number of rooms in an apartment or
house, they include all rooms other than the KITCHEN AND BATHROOM
(i.e. not just the bedrooms, but also the LIVING ROOM, THE DINING ROOM). Thus, a Zweizimmerwohnung will have one
bedroom and a living room, while a Dreizimmerwohnung will
have a maximum of two bedrooms.

Students often live in a
Studentenwohnheim (cheap university accommodation where students share facilities) or a Wohngemeinschaft (which is very much like a shared house or apartment in Australia).
