WEEK 7 Flashcards
Client and family centred practice
An approach to providing occupational therapy, which embraces a philosophy for respect for and partnership with people with people receiving services. It recognises the autonomy of individuals and the need for client choice in making decisions.
Common OT interventions
Establish or restore a skill
Adapt of modify
Health promotion
Prevention of disability
Maintain current functional abilities
Restoration approach
Address the impairments in body function in order to enhance performance skills and improve occupational performance
E.g. constraint based movement therapy – constraining the use of the unaffected limb and retraining the use of the affect limb
Skill acquisition approach
Individuals who have previously developed this skill but have since lost it e.g. teaching meal pre to an elderly gentlemen who is returning to live alone after a 4 month admission to hospital
OR
Teaching an individual who is yet to develop a skill e.g. practicing handwriting, learning to tie shoelaces
Adaption approach
When underlying client factors or performance skills are NOT expected to improve
Often involves the prescription of adaptive equipment or assistive devices
Environmental modification
Modifying both the physical and social environment
Important to include family members
Prevention approach
Aimed to maintain occupational performance
Targeted at anyone at risk of developing limitations in occupational performance in the future
Palliative approach
Aim to support relief from symptoms, pain and stress of a serious illness
Support person maintain engagement in meaningful activities and roles
What is cancer?
A generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body
Defining feature is rapid and uncontrollable growth of abnormal cells, that can invade adjoining parts of the body and spread to other organs - “metastasis”
Neoplasm
An abnormal mass of cells (e.g. tumors) typically exhibiting progressive and uncontrollable growth
Oncology
The study and treatment of cancer
Metastasis
The process whereby malignant cells transfer from one part of the body to another and give rise to other tumors e.g. cells travel and make their way to other organs in the body
Risk factors of cancer
Advancing age
Family history
Tabacco
Drinking alcohol
Environment and chemical carsoegens
UV rays
Treatment of Cancer
Surgery (removal of tumors)
Radiation therapy (ionizing radiation to destroy cancer cells)
Chemotherapy (cytotoxic drugs to kill cancer cells)
Biotherapy (hormone therapy)
Bone marrow transplant (blood cancer)
OT and cancer
Assessment and management of cancer or cancer treatment related symptoms (fatigue, cognitive impairments, lymphedema, pain, reduced ROM and strength)
Overlap with palliative care. Goal setting and enabling participation in valued occupations in the context of advanced disease
Increasing evidence to support cancer rehabilitation – improve function, QOL and slow down functional decline.
