WEEK 3 Flashcards
Step 3 of EBP process
Appraise
Critical appraisal of evidence for validity, clinical relevance and applicability
Systematic review
Authors have systematically searched for, appraised and summarized all available evidence on a specific topic or intervention
Meta analysis
Builds on a systematic review
Uses statistical analysis to combine the results of quantitative studies
Combining the results of lots of studies
Randomised controlled trials
Gold standard of clinical trials
People are randomized into an experimental group to receive a particular new treatment, and a control group who receive usual care – differences in outcomes between those 2 groups are investigated
Case controlled studies
Studies that compare to groups of people – those with the disease and a similar group of people who don’t have that disease
Case studies
Can be a case study of one or a small group of people who have been involved In a case study
Expert opinion/editorial
Need to support this evidence with a higher level of evidence
Hierarchy of evidence
- Meta analysis
- Systematic review
- Randomised controlled trials
- Case controlled studies
- Cohort studies
- Case studies
- Expert opinioneditorial
Quantitative research
Involves measurement of outcomes using numerical data under standardized conditions
This approach provides a summary of data from measurement scales that then undergoes statistical analyses
Qualitative research
Used when you want to find out someone’s perspective or experiences
Seeks a deep understanding of a phenomenon and describes human nature and its complexity, people’s perceptions of certain issues and/or their experiences
Insider ‘view’
Coronary heart disease
Occurs when fatty deposits (plaque) build up in the coronary arteries and reduces blood flow to the heart.
Risk factors of CHD
Being overweight
High cholesterol
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Physical inactivity
Unhealthy diet
Smoking
Prolonged stress
Symptoms of CHD
Tightness in chest
Shortness of breathe
Heart attack
Extreme fatigue
Pain in shoulders and arms
Ischemia
Deficient supply of blood to a body part
Role of OT for pt with CHD
ADL rehabilitation
Stress and pain management
Assistive technology and adaptive equipment
Goal setting
Self management education
