WEEK 10 Flashcards
Nociceptive pain
Pain experienced when there is damage to tissue
Simulation of pain receptors by the inflammatory chemicals created when there is damage to tissue
e.g. temp, sharp object, pressure
Neuropathic pain
Pain caused by a lesion affecting the somatosensory nervous system
Peripheral - e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome at wrist, ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow
Central – e.g. Post amputation pain, spinal cord injury
Idiopathic pain
Pain without a known cause and is not a diagnosis of psychogenic pain
Acute pain
Immediate pain in response to injury or illness
Typically time limited
Accurate assessment of underlying cause and type of pain results in selection of appropriate treatment
Chronic pain
Persists beyond the time of healing of an acute disease, injury or surgery
May not be associated with an acute or chronic pathological process that causes continuous or intermittent pain over months or years
Lasts for over 3 months
Tissue damage is usually not the main issue
