CN 1
Olfactory, Sensory
enables your olfactory system and sense of smell
CN 2
Optic, Sensory
transmits electrical impulses from your eyes to your brain
CN 3
Oculomotor, Motor
helps to adjust and coordinate eye position during movement
CN 4
Trochlear, Motor
enables movement in the eye’s superior oblique muscle
CN 5
Trigeminal, Both
sending pain, touch and temperature sensations from your face to your brain
CN 6
Abducens, Motor
innervates the lateral rectus muscle, an extraocular muscles of the eye, which is responsible for the abduction of the eyes on the same (ipsilateral) side.
CN 7
Facial, Both
control facial movement and expression
CN 8
Vestibulocochlear, Sensory
It communicate sound and equilibrium information from the inner ear to the brain. The cochlea, the part of the inner ear where the cochlear part of the nerve originates, detects soundwaves.
CN 9
Glossopharyngeal, Both
provides motor innervation to the stylopharyngeus muscle, which is responsible for elevating the pharynx and larynx.
CN 10
Vagus, Both
responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, such as digestion, heart rate, and respiratory rate, as well as vasomotor activity, and certain reflex actions, such as coughing, sneezing, swallowing, and vomiting
CN 11
Accessory, Motor
This nerve supplies the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles, which have the following functions: Rotation of head away from the side of the contracting sternocleidomastoid muscle. Tilting of the head toward the contracting sternocleidomastoid muscle. Flexion of the neck by both sternocleidomastoid muscles.
CN 12
Hypoglossal, Motor
enables tongue movement. It controls the hyoglossus, intrinsic, genioglossus and styloglossus muscles. These muscles help you speak, swallow and move substances around in your mouth.
